Chapter Fourteen

Breakfast in Bed

Nicholas had brought Alex breakfast in bed almost every Saturday morning for a year and four months, with few exceptions. They’d tapered off a little during Alex’s illness, and missed a couple of weekends after the fire. And a few times, they’d skipped it to meet Jade and Veronica for brunch, but most Saturdays that moment of connection was a staple of their weekend routine.

Alex wasn’t complaining. He enjoyed the breakfasts, the time spent together, and the way it eased them into the weekend. Sometimes he did it on other occasions too; other times he got up and made the effort because a chilly Tuesday in October warranted a celebration and Nicholas said he wanted to bring Alex waffles or bacon and eggs for no reason at all. Whenever Alex mentioned it, people seemed thrown off guard. Brandon had first assumed their little tradition was a birthday thing, and Jade agreed there was no way anyone—even Nicholas—would be working that hard to woo their partner a year and four months into the relationship. But it wasn’t Nicholas’s style to stop a good tradition.

Food was Nicholas’s love language. Or one of them. Taking care of the people he loved, that was the real language he spoke.

And Alex loved waking up to the smell of bacon and the sound of sausage sizzling in a pan, or the taste of his favorite iced coffee to wash pastries down. Nicholas knew his favorites, knew every breakfast food he liked best. And Alex showed his appreciation any way he could.

But as the move and the fire changed how often Nicholas could bring him breakfast in bed, Alex adjusted. He missed their routine, but he knew life was hectic lately. They were still getting back in the swing of things, and Nicholas treated him with morning meals of homemade toaster pastries, or a freezer full of bacon and sausage burritos for anytime they didn’t wake up early enough for a full spread, or weekdays when Alex would be headed out of the door quickly to get to work before his midday classes.

Today was not a breakfast in bed morning. Alex blinked, his eyes opening in slivers to block out the bright sunlight as much as possible. They’d forgotten to close the blinds again and hadn’t yet replaced the blackout curtains that helped them sleep in late on weekend mornings like they had at their old apartment. The old ones weren’t damaged by the fire much, but they smelled like smoke and dampness and there was no way they wanted to bring that into their new apartment. The sun pouring through the open blind slats stung. Groaning, Alex threw an arm across his eyes as he rolled over. “It’s so freaking bright,” he whined. Sunlit mornings might have been a source of optimism for most about the great day ahead, but an excessively light morning was never Alex’s idea of a good time. Not on the one day of the week he could sleep
